OBSERVATIONS IN THE WORKPLACE JUNGLE

There is a current myth in the workplace that transparency is the word of the day in America. I have been noticing that the pretense of this is encouraged but for the wrong reasons. In short, it has become a way to "flush out" the thinkers and true energetic contributors so that they don't threaten the entrenched entitled old guard. That old guard may actually not be "old" in years, but insecure nonetheless. When the worker is asked for their input they are staunchly reminded that there is a protocol in place that has taken much time to establish, and that change will not come soon. Now, the sincere worker, who only wanted to share impressions has been marked as an irritant, and placed on a quiet list for future action. Their opinion was never really wanted. This was just an "old school" management tactic with no real COMMUNAL intention attached. The idea of Community has always been suspect, and feared by big business. Just see the history of Labor Unions. Big business has politically engineered the idea of "Corporate Culture" as the mirror of a community workplace. Everyone has always known that this model (essentially conformity) was unattainable and a sham, but still served many unsavory goals. Thus "players" embraced the idea knowing they could manipulate weaker souls into doing their bidding. This is the best of High School gamesmanship. However, there is a new model afoot, and making progress especially among younger educated workers. This is based more on a horizontal plane than a hierarchy of power players. The hierarchy is based on contribution, and knowledge at a certain moment in time. Thus, everyone has a chance to effect change and success in the workplace depending on what they bring to the table. Of course, people still have titles and specific responsibilities, but have to be responsive to the group dynamic rather then calling all the shots all the time. This is a more ORGANIC model, and generally easier on all concerned when embraced enthusiastically. Levels of stress decrease, work production increases, flexible schedules are welcome, maternity leave doesn't disrupt production or imply favoritism, less pretense ensues, and a more honest exchange develops among team members bringing creative solutions to the table faster and effectively. It is a new kind of Tribalism, but should lack the dangers of traditional Tribalism such as, superstition, priestly arrogance, "fear of other", etc. There will be trials, but keeping the game simple solves the problems. All have a place at the table otherwise they wouldn't be part of the whole. Here I would like to share a story from my youth. When I was fifteen I went to Ecuador for a time. During this phase of my life I was drawn to adventure (I still am). A tribe in the jungle of Ecuador, the Aukas (sp?), had just killed five Lutheran missionaries at the demand of their Medicine man-Priest. I was visiting Quito at the time, and met the families of these missionaries who were devastated by this tragedy. They offered to take me to meet the tribe, and I was totally into the trip! Because they were Christian they felt it was their duty to forgive, and continue to serve the tribe despite the disaster. I thought the missionaries were crazy, but wanted to meet the "head-hunters". When we got to the camp, not far from the place where the men were killed, we were greeted with jolly smiles and laughter. Our arrival was a celebration for these indigenous people that actually looked like jungle people. They barely resembled the modern culture of the time. They were playfully running up to us and hanging onto our arms, smelling our clothes, touching and poking us. I was tall, very white, blond, and must have looked like I came from another planet. I remember thinking that might be a way to see if we were ready to eat? Anyway, I was oddly enjoying the experience, and not in any way fearful. As it turned out the tribal members discovered that their Medicine man-Priest confessed being threatened by the magic of the Missionaries, and inflamed the tribe into killing the missionaries when they landed in their helicopter that fateful day. The tribe had been duped by him, and when they figured this out they exacted the severe penalty of death on him. However, there was not a sense of forgiveness, but a sense of justice withn their reprisal. They were happy again. There is more to the story like my acquiring two shrunken heads later taken away by U.S. customs much to my chagrin, but the purpose of the story here is to illustrate a point. Where there is a fixed internal tribal structure or hierarchy there is the real problem of abuse of power coming from fear of loss of power. leading to disaster. In these times disaster can take on momentous proportions threatening the world. We cannot afford primitive hierarchical models anymore, because the effects are too great. We can now, with the new models available redefine the "tribe" and the workplace. We really don't have a choice do we?

FIND YOUR TRIBE -- Democracy vs.Capitalism

I wrote this post months ago, but just now decided to post the text regardless of the timing since the actual message is timely. I woke up this morning with a very scary thought. Usually, my morning thoughts are upbeat. Today, for some reason, I realized that the backbone of our recent U.S. economy has been largely based on Real Estate value. Thus the broken economy. All of our manufacturing and production jobs, the previous economic base, have been moved offshore where Corporations can operate without mainland restrictions or necessary federal tax requirements. Corporations now indirectly plunder the benefits of a comfortable infrastructure at home, and cheap abused labor abroad. When the Bush era began our nation had a huge surplus of wealth, and within the short period of eight years we found ourselves in two expensive wars, and a huge national debt in the trillions. How could this have happened, and realistically how are we to rebuild this country without industry and production? WE CAN'T!!! That is the tragic problem that I woke up to this morning. The idea of a world economy is impossible, and a pipe dream that has been sold to the American public by a cabal of greedy corporate mongrels (yes,I mean mongrels). America has been raped and its tax base compromised by devaluation. There isn't any more money in the common public sector. The money is concentrated at the top, and historically this is very serious, and the cause of great suffering and unrest. Are you ready? I'm ready spiritually, but on every other front I am not ready. Firstly, rather than complain I suggest that we should gather together, start to generate powerful communal spiritual power that leads to political sanity. The sanity will come from this strong spiritual grounding. Not religious dictum, but spiritual awakening in the greater sense. An awareness of the connectedness of all life, and our humble place on this ball of dirt would be a great starting point. We no longer have the power to be the consumers of the world. That place will go to China in the near future. We have great contributions to make to the greater good of the planet through technology, knowledge, our great repositories of knowledge (museums, libraries, etc), and a democratic model of governing. In a sense the democratic model is our product. The American Experiment has been successful. Not because of Capitalism, but because of its vast homogenized mix of cultures. Democracy and Capitalism are NOT synonymous. Capitalism is a separate issue, and others are now doing that better than us. Capitalism is soul-less by its very nature, and can operate in many climates. Community has always been the default solution for American culture. FIND YOUR TRIBE !!!

TRANSCENDENTAL CURE

I know the above heading screams of miraculous possibilities. This is not really my intention. However, this short piece is a discussion of an idea, a real and known possibility. What is one of the characteristics of suffering? From all the literature, and anecdotal experience of suffering we see that so much of suffering is phrased as a "trap". This appears to be a place that one can't get out of, a pain that one cannot escape. A bondage that is not understood, and seems unfair at best. This myopic experience is characterized where the individual cannot find the objectivity to solve the riddle of their suffering. Patterns of pain continue to repeat with no apparent cure. Watch the patterns. Even if we find the origins of the pain how do we unravel the mystery of these reoccurring patterns of suffering?
I contend, and not in a morbid way, that there is no way to understand the answer to this question. The mind that we rely on so sincerely is also bound by this mystery. In fact, the mind is a partner in crime with this mystery. However,we will continue to find temporary small relief of our suffering in little things like a change of career, a salary raise, a mate, an orgasm, a beautiful sunset, etc. These "false soldiers" really cannot protect us against the great mystery of life's suffering. So what can we do?
My thought is that we need to consult others over the centuries who have examined this problem thoroughly. Most of these individuals codified the cure in poetic, religious, or mystical language. However, the common denominator of these explorers is advising us to surrender to a higher, unknown place deep within our core. They devised technologies of breathing, formulas of sound, and stories that took our conscious awareness to a place beyond the five senses. All of these methods worked. Some more successfully than others, but all moved us along in the journey of self discovery. Surprisingly as this journey expanded we often got healthier, happier, and more vital in our interaction with others. This common experience ancient explorers explained were symptoms of the healing of suffering, but not the cure.
In India the cure is described as the realization of the nature of the individual person as eternal, full of knowledge, and naturally happy,I.E. Satchidananda Vigraha. This is the beginning place for entering the "transcendental realm" of awareness. There many other events take place, but the death of suffering is guaranteed. Listening to the wisdom of many who came before is part of the cure. Embracing a method of going within will begin the journey. The rest will happen accordingly. This is a transcendental cure that begins with one simple act of will on the part of the person who wants out of the endless cycle of suffering. In the ancient tome of India, the Bhagavad Gita (Song of God) the details of this process, and technology are explained. You will find in this process that you are forever a person,a servant(loaded word for Westerners), but now forever a peaceful, self satisfied, empowered, happy person. You will still have the responsibilities and struggle of life, but with a different vision and experience. Hope this offering is of use and helpful?

GROUND ZERO

Well, here is a timely topic. If you were alive or conscious we all remember when 911 happened. Can you remember the surrealistic nature of that moment? After all, this was America, and these things don't happen here. This kind of thing is only seen in foreign lands where they have little or no security, bad infrastructure, and uneducated simple people. A similar event was the bombing of the American marine base in Beirut Lebanon in the early nineteen eighties killing over 300 marines in their early morning sleep. The follow-up to this disaster was a total lack of action by the Regan administration after the bombing. There appeared to be no repercussions. We will never know what action was taken by the Regan administration. 300 plus highly trained U.S.Marines dead, and no response by our government. Odd?
My question is a simple question. Why have we all become expert in foreign policy and politics? Does the Internet really compensate for a real education; a higher education? I think not. Here's an amazing example. I know people who truly believe we, as a human race, are placed here by aliens. Planted, so to speak, to be harvested at a future date. Does this seem worthy of even a minute of your time? They think so because they have found others on the Internet who think this way. Does that make it valid? Does consensus really make something right? If I get a bigger number believing my way does that make my thinking valid even though there is no evidence to prove me right?
Many are now saying that the land at "Ground Zero" is hollowed. In a certain sense they have a point. This is the place where 3000 plus died, and were cremated. New York City is a very complex mix of cultures, and influences of many people worldwide mixing and nicely coexisting daily on the streets. Every block has a mix of diverse events happening side by side. This city is the only city of its kind in the world. This is not a typical American city, but a World city. A city whose annual budget is equal to a number of countries; roughly 40 billion dollars plus. Most of those killed in the attack by militant Islamic fanatics were not American citizens. Roughly about one-third were actual citizens of the United States of America. Somehow this place in downtown Manhattan is all about America and a rallying call for hatred. Hatred directed at the culture that produced those fanatical ignorant attackers. Ignoring the fact that all cultures are guilty of grave cruel acts upon others. We, as Americans, are no exception. The stupidity of this controversy around the building of an Islamic Cultural Center several blocks from Ground Zero is that a whole culture is being blamed for the actions of these few. Also, this blame is absurdly being heaped upon roughly one-third of the worlds' population who are followers of the Islamic tradition.
My interest is in who is fomenting this serious polarizing of cultures? What would be the benefit of this worldwide situation if this polarizing were successful? Also, who would benefit by such a schism of cultures worldwide? Can you answer these questions? Islam is the fastest growing religion on the planet. Could this threaten some other interest group? Of course, this is an issue, and certainly of interest. Which vast natural resources(not just oil) fall within the borders of this faith and culture? This could also be of interest to the sincere researcher. These are age-old themes, and problems. However, now with the advent of the Internet and the coming together of cultures and beliefs on the "information highway" we have the possibility of a better, less sectarian, world culture. The younger generation worldwide is beginning to understand this possibility, and they will have to be the ones to implement the changeover into a world culture. Unity within diversity will be the better model for the future. This idea reflects a profound spiritual truth known in India for a very long time. "Achintya BedaBeda Tattva", I.E.inexplicably simultaneously one and yet different. Mysteriously there is no loss of identity, and yet a sense of unity beyond the differences. This allows for the diversity of human experience without having to conform to some model that excludes others. The founding fathers of the United States of America had this vision, and were careful to preserve this vision for the future avoiding a Theocracy with some exclusive idea. All were welcomed and encouraged to live peacefully without forcing their process of life on others. This is the American experiment and experience, and the only time in human history, that we know of, where this is possible. The Islamic Cultural Center is being developed to show that world the actual face of Islam, and encourage and contribute to the complex and inclusive landscape of New York City - a world city.

ENTITLEMENT VS. ENLIGHTENMENT

Well, this topic has been on my mind lately. Please allow me some time. Firstly, ENTITLEMENT. We appear to be a culture obsessively striving for entitlement in every endeavor. Incidentally, this is also a worldwide issue. More money, bigger house, more things, more 'coolness', more status, fame, beauty, power, etc. In a sense this is the opportunity that human life offers us travelers. However, there is another side to this hungry search. We endlessly hear about deadly tribal encounters among Shia and Sunni, political power struggles, religious infighting, hate crimes, etc. All of us have noticed the surliness of a civil service employee at the motor vehicle department or City Hall. It appears that everyone is attempting to secure their position in a world that is by its very nature a world of change. Today you are on top, and tomorrow I am on top. That is the record of human history. Sometimes the "top dogs" are benevolent demagogues, and sometimes not. Sometimes the achievement of bigger and better is kind to us, and sometimes not. So what is the magic that makes this striving work? The magic that equalizes the crazy need to fill the void with things and power? What is the magic that will solve the riddle? I contend that the magic ingredient is "Give Back" in equal portions. The most successful achievers are those who give back to the society that gave them the boost of success. Also, it appears that when the successful or fortunate do extend themselves in this way they have more success. One example is the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation. This effort continues to increase the fortune of the founders annually. There are many more examples. Also, it appears that those who "give back" find a happier balance in their lives. Those who don't are haunted by fear and a continued need to secure their position. The result of this fearful mentality is a callousness toward others, and a disregard of the suffering of their fellow humanity. The natural progression of this is an equal reaction within society. I.E. the French Revolution of 1789. This violence is the result of an imbalance and an overly entitled segment of society.
Recently I noticed that in every area of my own life it has become important to be watchful of this issue of entitlement without balance. Fortunately, from a young age I was encouraged to travel, participate in community organizations and volunteer when I had spare time. Somehow this gives me some small appreciation of my good fortune, and helps me realize that I am not "owed" these blessings. The minute we think that we are owed something because of our "specialness", our race, our position, our wealth, our anything, we are on the road to disaster! Read history and see the proof of this.

Now to the other side of this issue: ENLIGHTENMENT. Along with this desire to lord it over nature by various means comes the issue of "Grasping". A crude example would be if I lunged toward you you would jump back. The mystical Tibetans say that one cause of our suffering is this tendency to "Grasp" at things. If you grasp for enlightenment it will elude you. If you grasp for material things they will leave you. We all have this experience. Remember your first failed young romance? So what is this issue of "Enlightenment"? Finding the quiet place within ourselves; that place where we are the observers of our world, and not the victims of our world. Developing the mentality of gratefulness for the opportunity of this life even as humble as it may appear. Working to prepare ourselves for receiving the gifts that come our way. In this way we become fiends with the world around us, and the greater forces that move the cosmos. It is important to know that we don't need to become bereft of all good things, empty our pockets, and wander off into the wilderness poverty stricken. This "false renunciation" can have its own hubris. A hubris even more insidious than the obvious arrogance of the materialist. The dangers of piety are disastrous to the whole process of enlightenment. Just see the history of "holiness", and the disasters that followed. This is not to say that becoming "holy" is a bad thing, but be careful in the process, and have good mentors. This process of enlightenment is a creative process, and not a static process. The whole universe is ruled by a creative process. Some cultures refer to this as the work of the "Goddess". Just as the mother creates the child within her body we are created within this world. The other active principle is the fathering or male effect. The "act of will" necessary to move forward and develop our world. Thus, the male principle.
The trick is to become Enlightened in the process of Entitlement. The process of Entitlement will always be there ebbing and flowing. How we "sit" with this process is the important thing. Can we remain grateful through the process? Can we be equiposed through our life? Can we begin to develop the product of this refinement of consciousness called Love? The next event in this process is the discovery of the object of this Love. That is for another entry. Love to all.......

ON THE BUS OR POSEUR CENTRAL

This entry is a little hairy--be patient.I have noticed a pattern within the media, and among members of my local community. The idea of "safety in numbers" is being interpreted in new ways that in reality undermines the safety factor. I'll explain. My observation is that if you keep the ongoing dialogue within a particular agreeable community there is little danger to the greater society at large, and an imagined security among the like-minded. Part of this observation is clear. If we keep talking to the same people little change happens in the greater community. However, the imagined 'security' among the like-minded is the dangerous myth that glares out at me from the blogs, emails, social networking sites, etc. The apparent 'evil' ingredient is the polarizing element. We all become too isolated within our "safe" communities, and forget other factors that affect our daily lives. Politicians enjoy this grouping effect because it makes it easier for them to manipulate numbers, and anticipate results. They really never have to show their real faces;just change the mask. Can you see the danger? Notice how at political rallies in the last few decades only those who claim allegiance to the same "party talk" were admitted into the events. All others were found and ejected sometimes violently.
I have noticed a similar trend socially. In fact, this has really had a profound affect on my optimistic hope for real social change in our society. Still I refuse to surrender to the mob of complacency and conformity. Incidentally, I see this conformity even among the so-called cool, hip crowd. People can become hip today just by wearing a certain look or tattoo, etc. Little attention is paid to their words or actions initially. I have always said the "hip and groovies don't pay the bills". What I mean by this is that generally they do not foment change or support anything that will upset their status quo. They rarely support the communities they claim to believe in, and when "push comes to shove" they cave in and join the coward conformists leaving the fate of martyr to the courageous few. Don't count on the "hip and groovies" to speak up and support the cause. They never support any progressive event financially. This support traditionally comes from the educated middle class sector or the poor. Those who still have hope for a better world. People who want to add texture to their lives, and validity. The "hip and groovies" are pessimists and depressives.
I am going out on a limb here to say that today everyone can look cool, smoke pot, know the game because of the media dictum, and still not really embrace the ethical and spiritual truth of substantial change in society. I.E. greater depth and spiritual awakening. Being a "Poseur" is the norm not the exception. Its a safe place, and no one will ask you your "truth". Just be cool. However,to be fair there are many very cool people in the techno sphere, creative realm, and everywhere who appear to conform to the "hip" style of the time, but really are committed to positive change. At this time the path is unclear how to make this change happen on the larger scale globally, and not just on the national level. The new populations are thinking how to bring about global change. The Internet is their field of change. The old forms are changing, and hopefully dying along with the old institutions who are unwilling to morph into a new spiritual model integrated on the human stage where we all begin to see the commonality of experience, and appreciate the difference of experience. The Internet,"the Web", connection can do this. Notice how the entrenched governments and corporations are trying to wrangle control of the Net. We cannot allow them this field of control. China is a very sad example of this new frontier of abuse. So much greatness within China cannot be shared by the greater world because of the government control of the Internet. This is the new terrain of social change worldwide. Stop preaching to your choir and take it further. Remember the motto painted on the magic bus FURTHER (sic). Either you are on the bus or off the bus! Love to all.......

LUIS BORGES VS THE CASH COW

So I was 'listening to the news today about an unlucky man who made the grade' and then couldn't find a job. Forgive me,I know; this opening is a semi-plagiarism, but it's relevant and poetically works for a lead line. Actually, I was listening to the news today (Spring 2010) and they were discussing the economic situation in Spain. Currently there is 20% unemployment in Spain, and the universities are filled with eager job aspirants. However, there aren't any jobs, and it is unlikely there will be jobs in the future. So the question arises; what is the purpose of this higher education?
The job loss phenomena is not isolated,it is worldwide. Twenty years ago when I was graduating with another degree, after going back to school, the prospect in the workplace for a plethora of job choices was dim. Now twenty years later the grim truth is glaring, but, I might add, not depressing if we keep an open mind about the goal of education. That said, let's look at the problem and the field of opportunity.
Last week I borrowed a copy of essays by the renowned Spanish speaking writer Luis Borges, and found that I easily became absorbed in his thoughts, and overwhelmed by his fund of knowledge. I couldn't help asking myself what created this man? How did he find his way in the world of scholarship and fame? I also began to take inventory of the people in my life, and their work choices over the years. This was revealing, and, for myself, encouraging. With few exceptions everyone I could think of was making their way in life in an area other than the field of their studies. Those in medicine and law were the exceptions. However, they too made choices that were creative and highly specialized in rarefied areas of their fields. Why do people not work in their area of study, or choose to specialize in far corners of a chosen field? Additionally, what happened to the rest of those who didn't specialize or didn't complete their degrees?
One example I found very interesting came from a cousin of mine who graduated from a prestigious school (Carnegie-Mellon) in the performing arts, and yet he is a very successful screenwriter and producer. Acting was his dream, but his field of vision expanded to include other areas of opportunity within that world. Another friend of mine graduated with a degree in music from a Conservatory of Music, and now works in a management position that requires a facile intellect deep in the bowels of a very important scientific research library. A multitude of friends graduated with college degrees, but almost without exception work in unrelated fields. I myself have never applied directly the knowledge base of my areas of study as a job.
So the question is: what contribution does education make to our lives, and society in general? Are the years in school about getting a job, and what are we to do now that there are few,if any, jobs? Additionally, the process for getting a job today is arduous and impersonal--a ritual of corporate hubris. A blind exercise in blind luck. Traditionally, jobs that were labor based, rudimentary, mechanical, skilled craft, support staff, etc. were found through the community grapevine, personal referral, certification guild or union "work boards". These jobs didn't require the huge expense of higher education, but were "on the job" trained positions. They were often skilled apprenticeship positions that were taught and mastered directly. Only a small percentage of the general population actually attended a college or university. Now even for the simplest entry level company position the applicant must have at least an Associates Degree in some related area. How, and why has this happened? In short, education became big business. Now too that model is threatened because the other half of the equation, jobs beyond the mortarboard, are nonexistent. This particular "house of cards" is about to tumble down. The "CASH COW" is dead. The jobs are gone. Some see this as hopeful, and an opportunity to return to a saner world. Still the question remains: What is the purpose of a "higher" education?
Also, there is a "Class" issue here that is never discussed. In a sense it is the "elephant in the room". I would like to propose a question. Why does the common man need to go to college, and how did this happen? I suggest that envy and greed could be a driving force in this history of education within the last half of the twentieth century. Historically there is a perception that "educated" people are better in some way. Not just better because they know more, but higher on the human scale. In a sense, closer to God or have access to more privilege. This last idea, privilege, is certainly true. However, when I lived in Detroit I found that the families of factory workers had a high quality of life. They were well spoken, had a home, often a boat, and a small cabin or summer house in the lake region. They had good lives, but limited formal education. What was the need?
In our confused democratic culture we have looked to some of the worst models of the past to guide us as a society. We have unconsciously embraced an "Ascending Process" that advocates climbing the ladder of success and society. We have become a nation of "social climbers" conforming to values that really were designed for a very small number of the privileged class. Metaphorically, what is the value of being on the top of a ladder that is not firmly rooted on a strong foundation? The bulk of the population is the foundation for all.
Maestro Luis Borges, poet, essayist, intellectual is the idea behind higher education. He was the exception not the rule - the Thinker. Thinking was, and is, his job. Pondering history and the human journey is his job, and by doing this he can provide us with inspiration and fine mortar to build our knowledge of this journey called Life. This is the "Descending Process" that leads to empowerment, inspiration, and knowledge equipping us for the trials of this journey. What I am proposing is not anti-intellectual as some would like to believe. I hesitate calling him a spiritual Sherpa (Tibetan mountain guides), because of the mountain climbing metaphor. However, if we are to climb the spiritual mountain we really do need to surrender to the humble knowledge of the "Sherpa" to guide us. This method is a descending process that guarantees success. I would like to share a real life story at this point if that is ok?
The very wealthy, entitled and spoiled 18 year old son of a friend of mine went on a trip to Tibet with another of his schoolmates. On their way they decided to climb Everest, the highest mountain on earth. They hired a Sherpa guide and support team to get up the mountain. This, of course, is required by law. This boy and his friend were vital, powerful young men armored with the strength of money, the best schools, and the ego reinforcement of powerful self-made fathers. As the system requires the climbers have to gradually acclimate to different altitudes stopping for so many hours and days at different heights. Finally the summit was within site and reach. Roughly a mere one hundred yards to go. It was late in the day, temperatures were falling and the boys wanted to push ahead. The Sherpa guide advised them to settle down for the evening and finish the climb the next day. They asked if they could just move up the mountain another fifty yards or so. The guide flatly stood his ground. Quietly the boys decided to camp out further up the mountain against the advice of the Sherpa. When they found a chance they grabbed their equipment and headed up the mountain. The shadow was lengthening and the extreme cold arrived with the shadow. The boys managed to climb roughly another forty yards, and then they were stopped by creeping frost bite in their feet and hands. Their core temperatures were dropping and panic stepped in. The evening winds started and darkness fell. They couldn't get back to base camp. The end was near. Fortunately, the Sherpa and his team noticed their tent missing and began a search finding the boys just in time. The boys were evacuated off the mountain and flown to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately it was too late to save the hands and feet of both boys. After many amputations they survived with a terrible tragic result. Why wouldn't these all-American boys listen to the Sherpa? Why would they think they knew better? Hubris? Yes, but there was something even more sinister afoot. I contend that their sense of entitlement was fed by all of the worst that exists in a society that feeds on the idea of power and class over substance, ignorance of history and its lessons, education over knowledge, and independence over community. This is a sad tale, but a graphic metaphor. They are the poster boys. Love to all......

ROTTEN EGGS OR SOUR GRAPES

I have been unemployed for over one year. My hard earned unemployment benefits have run out. The other day I heard a Republican Senator from Kentucky interviewed. Kentucky is traditionally a Conservative Southern Democratic State. He explained that the reason unemployment benefits should not be extended (they have not, and will not be extended) is that people need to be willing to accept lower paying jobs. Actually, I was shocked by this statement. Firstly, in my part of the country there really aren't any lower paying jobs available that I can work. Even if I could get one of these fictitious jobs I would be unable to pay my bills. My unemployment benefits with my early social security just barely covers my monthly costs. I live very frugally even when employed. Actually, that isn't the real reason that I was shocked, and, I might add, angered. The arrogant tone of this "public servant", a Senator in the United States Congress, was the cause of my outrage. He took a very patriarchal position assuming that everyone, including me, can "pull ourselves up by the bootstraps" and get on with our lives. I may be able to do this, but what of those with children, a physical difficulty, an unexpected illness, overwhelming depression? Are these citizens disposable with such a callous remark? This unemployment crisis was not caused by me or the other unemployed, but by the greedy lack of oversight within an eight year parasitic administration. He went on to justify his position by saying: "what are we suppose to do....extend these benefits for another five years?". This was a dramatic exaggeration made to rationalize his callousness. I, for one, was not convinced. The cost of extending benefits for the unemployed is a drop in the bucket. The issue is that this money is earmarked from the "Stimulus Money Fund", and that is the issue. The "Stimulus" money is the buzz word that sends a message to the far right: OBAMA'S TAKEOVER. This Senator was willing to sacrifice honest sincere unemployed citizens for some cheap didactic neo-religious political ideal. He plays parent so that his "children followers" (voters) will think he is a good Dad, and take care of them in the future. He is actually giving them essentially, a "post dated check" that allows him to stay in the comfortable position of a United States Senator while even those in his economically depressed state of Kentucky suffer. WAKE UP PEOPLE !!! These guys are rotten, and care nothing for your welfare. Vote them out, and make your voice heard. Kick them out! The money is there. This is a blatant manipulation keeping you in fear. Reinvent yourselves, but never forget these monsters.

SUBTEXTING !

While getting ready this morning I was listening to the daily news, and following my morning routine. It has occurred to me for sometime that I need to address an issue that is profoundly in the forefront of so much of our collective cultural history. Our President, Barak Obama was giving a eulogy for the miners lost in the West Virginia mine explosion. I was moved by his words, and sincere intention. I listened closely beyond the words attempting to hear his real voice. There it was, loud and clear. A sincere man again performing another impossible task; comforting the grief stricken struggling miners'families. Forgive me, but I couldn't help my mind from wandering back to the Katrina disaster, and the apparent lack of response and real concern of our President, George W. Bush at the time. Of course, this could just be a style issue, and I want to give the past some slack, but how can I honestly compare the quality of these two men without serious questions? So I have decided not to make 'odious' comparisons for this piece. Instead I will look at the nature of recent abusive speech, criticism, and judgment thrown at our current President Barak Obama after only one year in office.
How is it that from almost the beginning of his term in office every harsh, cruel, and patently mean-spirited epithet known has been thrown his way. After all, remember he walked into the White House inheriting a catastrophe beyond any one's expectation. A culture virtually stripped of its opulence by wolves of greed in less than a decade. The greater population laboring under 21st century corporate feudalism. A catastrophic health crisis where children are expected, for the first time in our history, to live shorter lives than their parents. Why has he been singled out as the cause, or even, the contributor to this mess? How is it that this one man has galvanized the extreme radicals of the right and the media personalities so effectively and dramatically?
Here is where I would like ALL OF US to dig deep into our hearts, and courageously see if there might be a dark vein deep within the mine of our collective unconscious that is like a putrid underground river buried under the great weight of history? A pattern that appears in all the worlds' cultures one way or the other. A tribal trait that no longer is useful to our advancement. The United States of America is probably the only culture on earth that has the means, legally and socially, to effectively transcend these old patterns. Of course, they will have to be replaced by new patterns. Let's hope we know how to do this. I think we can. What am I trying to say? Here it is-THE SUBTEXT. We are a racist culture, and the subtext of the cruel attacks on our President are of a racist nature. We are, even the best of us, white or of color, conditioned to act in racist ways. This we can, and must look at, and stop by a conscious intentional choice when thinking, speaking and acting. This is active meditation that will yield a great result. Practice routing out your racial, and other prejudicial thoughts. All actions begin from a thought. My Guru referred to this body consciousness as the "skin disease". Once, in New York, he was asked by an african american why so many of his disciples were white implying there was some favoritism. My Guru replied, "I am the Guru, and I am black". I.E. what is your problem?
Of course, there are valid criticisms of any politician in public office, and that is the playing field of this breed of humans, but baseless attacks are of another nature. Can you see this? Discuss the subtext. Please try, and share the power of introspection everywhere !!!

WHAT GOES AROUND - MIGHT MAKE SENSE ? REMIX REALITY

Not long ago a longtime close friend of mine exploded in a fit of rage that had been building for some time. With a minor provocation he launched into a detailed dismantling of our friendship based on the premise that I was a "know it all" and "unable to accept criticism". Of course, this was very painful and unexpected. This close friend was someone whom I trusted fully not to lightly judge me, and someone who I was completely unselfconscious around. The wound is still fresh and the scar will remain. This event began me thinking about how it is that I was accused of being a "know it all" when, in fact, I can never remember having a truly original thought? Yes, that's true-never! I tried to explain at the time of this traumatic assault that I only wanted to share my experiences of life with others so that they might find some value within these stories. Of course, I am not free of pride, and possibly that was the offense?
Now I know for some of you sharing the thought that I have never had an original thought would seem embarrassing. Or, at the least, a taboo confession. However, I confess this, and assert the truth of this from my experience.
My first career was as a journalist. Actually, I aspired to be a journalist, but later realized that I had other interests and moved on from a job at the New York Times to my own short term as publisher of my own small newspaper. This was very uneventful and unsuccessful,I must add. My interest in journalism came from an insatiable thirst for information. Later on this thirst became a thirst for knowledge. At that point I began my journey of the heart, and traveled, meditated, chanted, read, etc. One day while sitting quietly slightly bored and wondering how I was going to entertain myself for the rest of the day I began to take count of my teachers (mundane and sacred), sources of knowledge, books, friends, music, beliefs, influences, etc. This amalgam of ideas I have been fortunate to explore I recognized as the raw ingredients of my intellect. At that moment I realized that all the ideas that I claim as mine are a profound mixture of all these influences. So, in this moment of insight and, I should add, subtle crisis, where was the original, individual thought? Where was my original contribution? Certainly this journey of life was not for nothing? What was the value of experience? Our ability to communicate is not all the wiser by being silent as some seem to believe. One teacher of mine used to say that 'the fool is revealed when he speaks, and that is why these rascals remain silent to fool others'. So how do we find value and originality in our friendships, family, community, nations, etc?
This quest became my passion. Where is the original thought, the original creativity? In the arts the expression is through the medium, and yet still the actual product is confined by rules or tangible (metal, stone, oil, etc.) limits. Music, another art, expresses through tradition, notation, instruments, cultural patterns, etc. So where is the original thought?
Finally, after much anxiety and observation a light began to shine within my mind. The nature of original thought is expressed by an "inspired impulse". It is a rich recipe of raw materials from many sources, but brewed through the agency of an "inspired impulse". Sometimes this is seen as a narrative voice, a painting, sculpture, musical innovation,a variety of mediums. What makes these thoughts or expressions fresh, and seemingly original is the "impulse" that generates the idea. The saying that there is "nothing new under the sun" is somewhat shallow and simplistic. What is new under the sun is the "inspired impulse" that moves the individual to tell a story, create a work of art or music, love the unloved, build kingdoms, create iphones, etc. That "inspired impulse" is the mystery. That is what we all try to give to others. Sometimes successfully and sometimes not successfully. This is also the abode of the lesson. Even very successful people will tell you of many lessons they learned after having an "inspired impulse". In many ways these stories of success mirror the seemingly unsuccessful stories of other individuals. I.E."failure is the pillar of success".
Although, sadly I have let down my good friend by my bad creative storytelling,"unbecoming behavior", and apparently made a fool of myself among our mutual friends I have again encountered that mysterious "inspired impulse". Once again my inner teacher keeps 'kicking my ass' until I get it right. Will I ever learn is the greater question? We will see because that is the road on this adventure !

A XMAS STORY

Many old cultures have stories of the magical tree. In ancient India there is the story of the Kalpavrksha Tree. This tree has the power to grant any wish. These trees are fully conscious-you can actually talk with them. Generally, this tree exists in a spiritual world far far beyond this material realm we live in, but some of these trees agreed to stay here and be available for fulfilling wishes. These trees are made of Chintamini; a spiritual substance that is unspoiled by any passage of time. If we had the vision we would see the trees covered with multicolored gems and the world around them sparkling with precious gems, gold and other precious material that we haven't encountered on this earthly journey. Can you see the parallel with our Christmas tree? I can. During a trip to India I visited a sequestered park surrounded by high walls that contained the fabled "desire trees". This place is so secret and sacred to the believers that there are frightful stories about misfortune that befalls those who force their way into the park without the proper humility. I was terrified before entering the park given my arrogant approach to anything that I question, and especially superstition. A friend of mine previously entered this park with the sole purpose to find a suitable husband and acquire two sons. She wandered around in a much-too-tight sari and one of the monkeys jumped her and bit her on the ass causing quite a scene among the ubiquitous monkeys and pilgrims alike. However, shortly thereafter she met her fine and talented husband and had two fine sons. One who has become a doctor and another a lawyer. Who knew? In my case my wish was ill placed. I asked for that which I already had and not that which I lacked. Thus, more of the same, and in bigger quantities. More surrender, and spiritual lessons. Oh, well. In retrospect what a stupid "goodie goodie" I was when I had the chance to fill my coffers, attain fame, or become brilliant in some field. At that time in my life I didn't know that all of this journey is spiritual, and any sincere wish that does no harm can be fulfilled by these mythical trees. Of course, the lessons will always continue to come even with the new wish. Slowly the vision will clear and the pilgrim will see the sparkle of jewels out of the corner of their eye at first. Then the inner sight becomes clearer and the beauty and opulence shines even in the dark. Have you ever walked in a dark snowy wooded landscape after a snowstorm and breathed in the cold crystalline air? Sounds strange? Not really. Sit quietly and breath deeply and try making a wish under your Xmas tree this year. Drink in the light and beauty of the decorations and sparkle. Whatever your wish I guarantee that,at the least, you will have a visionary coming year, but probably much more. In the coming year sudden moments of insight will occur filled with the light of many gems. Rubies, emeralds, sapphires, diamonds, and a host of other beautiful jewels will shine in your mind. Try this meditation and feel the security and pleasure within your Heart. You will get a glimpse of the world the ancients and many today describe as the Kingdom of God,Vaikuntha,Goloka Vrindaban, etc. You may even hear beautiful music or become inspired to write beautiful music, poetry or a kind letter. Try it....Happy Holidays....Love to all......

THE FABRIC OF AMERICA

Many years ago I was fortunate to know a very smart and elegant elderly lady, Barbara Egypt. She came to Kansas City to work for a cultural project in the African American community. At the time her job was to manage the periodic art exhibits, and other cultural events. She was in her early seventies completing a PhD. and writing a book on the great black families of America, entitled THE GREAT BLACK FAMILIES OF AMERICA. Additionally, she was also an amateur genealogist. She charted my ancestry using genealogical records from various archives, and noted there were branches of my family tree with direct lines connecting to these prominent black families. I previously knew the family connection to three presidents. One president was thought to secretly have a "mulatto" wife, President Buchanan. There was also a question of his race as he had ancestors that were privateers (pirates) on the islands off the coast of New England. Many of these pirates were freed slaves after the Civil War who harbored contraband for sale during reconstruction of the Union. Having very old American ancestry I knew that this was the case, and in my teens I was schooled in stories of the history of my family. This, even today, is a custom among old families. Especially in the south as the connection is more obvious and understood between the races. The original purpose of this entry is simply to place in the blog record a note about our diverse and complex history as a nation.
Today the dominant bulk of our population is still located on both coasts and the great lakes region. This has always been the case, and culturally reflects the true face of the United States. This population has been shuffled through the course of our short history, but generally these regions reflect to the world our values and character. This is not to minimalize the contribution of the rest of the population in the sparsely populated areas, but, as a nation, we must understand the history of our culture and not ficitonalize the story. The seat of our government is in the District of Columbia. Not a state, but rather a region set aside as neutral territory for running the government. Originally, the capital, so to speak, was New York, then Philadelphia and finally, Washington D.C. When we want to look at America (the United States)we need to look to these places to see the future of our nation, and the possibilities. Greatness is still shown in these densely populated regions. The future face of that greatness will be different, and yet complement our collective history. We will be more technologically involved, more diverse in our racial profile "Browner", have a greater reach throughout the world in a different way, we will not be the "big guy on the block", we will lead the world in feminine power, etc. Our female population will lead the world in equality as it already does. This one factor at this time in history is probably the most significant contribution we make on the world stage. We will always lead the planet in some way simply because we got out of the starting gate first. However, if we become complacent or loose our vision we can ultimately loose the race, and fall into the crevasse of history with other great civilizations long lost.
We are not great because we were created by white populations on the backs of black populations. We are not great because of some religious superiority. We are not great because of our wealth. We are not great due to so many other obvious powerful things. We are great because of the original "spiritually organic" vision of the founders who, though privileged, saw the dangers of the past and set in motion a machine that had adaptive qualities based on the knowledge of nature, history, philosophy, and the struggle of humanity through history. The system they put into motion was based on a method of "Advise and Consent" that required, regardless of the issue, disturbing debate and modified resolution . THAT IS THE SYSTEM. American government is not based on belief, sloganeering, prejudice, or even popularity, but upon an organic process put into place by the founding fathers. This is not to say that leaders will not get into power through the methods above, but they will be under the same controls as all who came before. The Democratic Process of Advice and Consent and an impartial system of law. That's all folks. Welcome the future with open arms and Love........

THE ELITIST BITE

THIS ONE IS A BIT LONG SO GET COMFORTABLE: When I was little I had a serious overbite, and I still own that overbite. For some unknown reason my parents never saw the need for braces? They probably never noticed? I did. How I noticed is the key point. Regularly someone would ask me to "eat quietly please!!!", and interrupt my reverie and love of food. Of course, being the "Monkey" in Chinese astrology that I am I would chew even louder and continue on my way. Monkeys are mischievous by nature. So, not unexpectedly, food became a form of expression for me, and a fascination. How different cultures honored food was of great interest. The motto "Food is Medicine",a Japanese scroll illustration, made so much sense to me that what I ate became an important factor in my personal health challenges. I was a frail child, and later in my twenties struggled to stay strong while eating excessive meat, drinking volumes of alcohol, and smoking two packs daily. Somehow on this journey I was encouraged by a remarkable woman in New York named Marion Tanner to change my evil ways. She was in her eighties and teaching yoga, raising a child dropped on her doorstep, and caring for less fortunate souls than she. I was immensely impressed and took her advice to try a vegetarian diet for a few weeks. Immediately my energy improved, my health improved and I liked the food choices which were much more numerous than the traditional diet. It worked for me. Later in this journey I became part of a wonderful restaurant that featured an exciting vegetarian menu. This was not "hippy food", but rather complex, masterfully executed menu items reasonably priced that provided a hugh variety of foods. Nutritionally the menu covered an exceptionally wide spectrum of food sources. Our patronage was wide ranging, and after some time we had to tighten our load and jettison much of our early-on business down the road to the "OM Cafe" (really) where they specialized only in a brand of 'non-dairy' food preparations with a Japanese flair. I became the bad guy for pushing out the food fetishists who always tortured our staff with a multitude of questions about the preparation and content of our recipes. We were almost completely 'Organic' and divided our menu into two categories of "Dairy", and " Non-Dairy" items and a full "Dairy and Non-Dairy" special daily. Virtually, any diet could be accommodated through this menu, but still the food fetishists couldn't grok the idea. It seemed to me that food for them was some kind of interface with society that allowed them a 'special' status. It had the feel of a religion, and not a source of joy, but belief. It annoyed me, and my basic push was that I had 'bigger polenta to fry'. Actually, many of these zealots looked and acted in unhealthy ways. They were wan, overly thin, joyless, often angry, souls.
Enter the ENVIORMENTAL MOVEMENT. Finally, we begin to see a cultural awareness of the holistic connection of our way of life and planet Earth. We also begin to see where we are disconnected and unwise in our collective and personal ecology. Gradually corporate America began to clean up its act, but the private household sector still wanted to maintain their consumer power and lifestyle choices even at the expense of the general good. Personal habits drive the engine. Only a small population group want to eat differently and consume differently. Over a short time this new pattern of eating began to catch on with an emphasis on health. This is a start. We began to connect the dots through the agency of the Enviormental Movement which showed us our intimate connection with the earth, air, water, animal life, plant life, etc. New aspects of biological science begin to develop. Nutrition becomes an important player in this change, and advanced degrees are offered. Slowly progress is made for the common man in our fortunate society. Still, even now, the poor are without choices other than Fastfood and over processed food. HOW TO MAKE BETTER FOOD SOURCES AVAILABLE TO GREATER NUMBERS OF PEOPLE IS THE QUESTION OF OUR TIMES. WIDER AND HEALTHER PROTEIN SOURCES ARE NEEDED. As human nature would have it there is always a segment of all movements that holds dear an elitist model to shore-up their insecure sense of self. This is happening even within the health conscious food movement. Because the dairy industry has contaminated cows with so many growth hormones, and other chemicals an elitist minority of healthy eaters rejects dairy as a nutritional source. Ignoring the idea that science, with the political will, could clean up this industry. This has become known as Veganism. One argument is that cows milk is for cows not humans. True, it is for cows, but can be broken down and "prepared" for human consumption as many older civilizations discovered. To make an even more 'erudite' argument from thier paltry fund of information they have created this new category of eating. Veganism has developed as a specialized eating cult. Vegetarianism is considered "old school". Shades of an "Ageist" agenda begin to emerge. Previously Vegetarianism was the category that defined a diet apart from the killing of animals. Those in that category were generally divided in two groups: Dairy and Non-Dairy. Of course, there were variations of eaters mostly based on ethnic preferences or regional preferences. So actually Veganism (non-dairy) is not new, but actually a political child of the Enviormental movement. Another rarefied branch of this elitist cult is the Raw Food idea. Of course, this is also not new (the prehistoric gatherers). Some of the expressions of this type of food preparation are wonderful and delicious, but rarely is any follower happy following this path for very long. Our bodies or maybe our tongues seem to want foods broken down by fire periodically. There are other ways to break down food with citrus and salt, but we have become enamoured by fire. This extreme element mirrors our extreme choices in life and works well protecting us from food born illnesses (see film "FOOD INC.). We no longer live under the fabled Coconut Palm Tree. A complex partial source of nutrition for seaside dwellers. I would propose that we no longer have the luxury of elitist thinking when there is so much knowledge and real science available to us to use for the betterment of our society and the planet in general. "Do what thou wilt, but do no harm" is the wise magical dictum, but Love must first be there. Then the teacher gently begins to encourage the student to 'do what they want'. Otherwise, without the greater Love there will be harm.

ANONYMOUS IS A WOMAN

This entry is a simple reminder of how far we have come and how this reflects the events of the moment in 2009. As late as the nineteenth century it was a common practice to bury female members of a family with the inscription on the tombstone reading "ANONYMOUS". It is hard for us today to understand the mind that could simply erase the identity of a female member of ones family. But this was not uncommon. Of course, in Islamic culture all are buried in unmarked graves symbolizing the final passage from this world and the wait for the judgement day. Also, in that culture, except in the very privileged classes we have no record of the passing of female contributors to society. Where and who are they? In a short time after death we are all forgotten, and all that remains are the results of our work while here, and the contribution of our collective impact on planet Earth as "she" has become known. The disturbing thing is that there are still those who would return us to another century where women were seen as useful processions without legal rights over their bodies, where the color of your skin could provide a life of continuous pain and fear, where only the privileged class of males could receive an education and vote for the leaders, where sexual expression had to conform to a specific proscribed cultural model, where movement was restricted by passage permits, child labor, etc. Remember, this was just, in some of these cases, only 50 years ago and in others less than 100 years. Our culture has opened the way for us and others to explore in a legal and safe way broader expressions of our humanity. The system we call democracy also known as the system of "Advise and Consent"was created by a class of privileged, highly educated, and for the times, enlightened souls. They did not establish a static idea of rulership, but rather, an organic and inspired system of governing that would protect the expression of thought and original ideas. They pondered the misdeeds of centuries, in fact, millennia, of despotic rulerships both secular and religious, and consciously discarded those models. Taking the best they could find from those ideas and forming a dynamic expression based on classical Greek and Roman structure, but offering the opportunity to all citizens. Of course, it took more than a century to bring women, people of color, and others into the system, but that has been achieved. This is how it works. The idea of "Original Intent" by the framers is a moot issue. The actual result has been a growing organism and it would be impossible to turn back the clock without destroying all that has been gained. Essentially, destroying the America we live in. We can only go forward. The past was not very nice. The good should be honored and spoken of nicely and buried with a beautiful marker citing the achievements of the outstanding members of our collective family. Anonymity is not an option any longer. There is the INTERNET and He/SHE is watching us all.................

AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

In the last decade of the nineteenth century in America there was a significant battle going on for the soul of the culture. This event had a number of expressions. The experimental utopian communities (Shakers, Quakers,Oneida Community, etc.) had existed for some time, and in their own way contributed to the landscape of American culture through simple manufacturing systems, useful gadgets (washing machines, sewing machines, etc.) However, these communities were beginning to decline due an interest in Free Thinking, Spiritualism, lack of births, and a trend of population movement to the cities, etc. In fact, these were just symptoms of a much more serious dilemma facing the growing wealth and importance of America on the world stage. The nature of this time in history saw a polarization of important thinkers divided roughly into two camps. It was in effect a spiritual dilemma. Henry David Thoreau had expressed his musings, The James brothers theirs, and many other thinkers of the era. For the purpose of this entry by way of example I am concerned with the dialogue of the healers and the healing professions. Plural. During, and after the Civil War medicine struggled with the questions of how the body heals and what should be the underlying approach to the healing arts. Profound damage had been done during the civil war to life and limb and the "soul" of the new America. Big rifts occurred between those who professed a mechanistic approach to healing using all the technologies developed during and after the war. They believed that the body was essentially a machine that could be manipulated in a variety of ways that would bring about healing. The other general group did not totally denigh the development of new technologies of healing (surgical, inoculation, etc.), but they observed that regardless what was done to the body externally the individual either got well or not according to some other factor. They attributed this to energy. Some felt that this had a supernatural source I.E. God, and others that is was magnetic or cosmic in origin.
This became a pitched battle between the "Mechanistic Healers" and the "Magnetic or Energetic Healers". Science as we know it today was still in its infancy in America. Medicine was a mix of both of these ideas being based on the Greek, Roman and European models. The Greek leaning more to a divine origin and the European more nature based and mechanistic. Gradually these two camps (Mechanists and Energetic) became so polarized that the idea of "Empiric" Science (I.E. Mechanistic approach) became the stronger camp, and organized into what we know today as Medicine. The Magnetic Healers became Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Naprapaths, Herbalists, etc. Still the question of why and how we heal has never been answered. Mysteriously the patient would get well or die.
There are those who feel that by some external or artificial method we can change our nature or condition and mold ourselves into some idea of ideal health. These individuals or groups believe that some change of activity, removal of an organ, even a psychological change of view, or choice of behavior will heal the problem. Still we have no actual "Empiric" proof of these results, only percentage data. Even that has widely varied results. Again the question of actual "Change" remains a mystery.
I love to use friends as examples in these entries because they are the most important to me in my journey. Recently one friend has made it clear that all behavior is a "choice" and thus we are, in this way, responsible for our behavior. I have found that generally these types of people think that they maintain a "moral high ground" for the rest of us. Yet I see their behavior is a vain struggle to artificially change their lives. It appears to be an artificial attempt at change. A "Mechanistic" attempt. I cry for them in my heart. They are so sincere and simple, and ultimately tortured. There are others that totally "go with the flow" and they get carried away for years in a fog of temporary delights. Haven't we all been here? They are enamoured by the illusion of the texture of life, and can't understand why the rest of us just don't take a vacation from our "productivity" to experience the "Now". This is the other extreme, "Energetic" attempt to be happy. Neither approach seems to bring successful results. So I have been pondering this problem for some time.
I have always said that "you can lie to anyone, but if you lie to yourself this is the greatest sin". I still think this is true. Please understand that I don't encourage lying. Anyway, it appears that if we spend sometime every day observing, and listening to ourselves we will come to know ourselves both mechanistically and energetically. We will see what we can change a bit, and what is our "nature". We will find intuitive ways to stay healthy or make healthy decisions. Also I have observed that we can learn from this approach to Love others less defensively knowing who we are, and not being threatened by someone else's questionable behavior. It seems that Health is a combination of taking care of the machine inside and out, and energetically keeping the flow of life lively and loving. Not developing an "Artificial Intelligence" to artificially change our nature.

9/11 AND THE ISLAMIC THING

Attention everyone: We as a nation have always been under attack! Oh, and we have always been attacking someone as well. First it was the British attacking us, and then a series of others including the Russians during the Cuban missile crisis, etc. At the same time we began systematically slaughtering the native tribes of North America. The British returned to burn down the White House in 1812, and so forth. History is important even if always written by the victor. Still there is some kind of a picture to look at although hand-colored by various interest groups. In my own life there has always been a social upheaval or war. It has never stopped.
Human history is a series of wars, and a dance of power. The ancient Peloponnesian Wars to the present. Even the great epic tome, the Bhagavad Gita (Song of God) was written on the battlefield of Kurushektra near what is now known as New Delhi, India. There are a multitude of examples. Where is the question of non-violence in human history? There has, and will always be a class of people who specialize in warfare for the benefit of their cultures.
The 9/11 event that shook our culture to the core is another example of this constant desire of humankind to impose it's view of truth upon another. Of course, we know now that these characters who played a part in the 9/11 event were religious fanatics, and generally considered to be full-blown narcissists according to their psychological profiles. They didn't come out of the great military colleges of the the great nations of the world, but were born out of social discontent. They were and are disruptive, and dangerous loose canons on the deck of the ship of destiny, but ultimately destined to be contained or thrown overboard.
Another player in world history is commerce. This player, in some ways, poses the greatest threat to the stability of humankind. When the balance of wealth shifts too much in one direction, and the privileged class becomes too indifferent to the suffering of others we can be assured that trouble is brewing. Then, the core demon of human nature, Envy, enters the picture and attempts to level the playing field albeit blindly and cruelly. The "have nots" imagine that their share of the mother- lode is theirs for the taking. Rarely, if ever, in history do we see them fairing better after the carnage. The powerful still remain in some form, or they change their coats in smart ways to conform to the new regime. I.E. the great Communist experiment (Manifesto), and the subsequent failure backsliding into the marketplace of human suffering, Russia today/China today. Oligarchy is the first step back to a free marketplace.
The central question that remains is how can a major world religion be the cause of such crazy actions? Actually, the history of many great religious traditions have seen this same problem emerge. Why this quandary? Certainly, Christianity has its track record of madness and mayhem. Virtually all major religious traditions show this demon of exclusivity. Generally, we find that those followers who reject the personal mystical responsibility to purify and refine their thinking and lives and see the greater connection of all life fall prey to fanaticism. A mideastern Moslem friend of mine who defines himself as a Sufi (mystical muslim) recently was confronted by a fanatical fundamentalist Christian at a very nice dinner party given by my Moslem friend. He listened to the ire of this young, innocent bigot and then replied. Pointing to his head he said 'in our tradition we say that the longest journey that a man takes in this life is the journey from here (pointing to his head) to here (he pointed to his heart)'. I was watching this and literally this moment briefly took my breath away. The young man didn't respond, but just sat quietly and shortly left the party. Hopefully, he began his journey of the Heart?
9/11 is not an Islamic Thing, but a human failure of great proportions. However, in so many ways it broke open the Heart of humanity, and made us all face our fragile passage on this planet. Now we can contemplate how to live life in a more inclusive way with more kindness toward each other, more intelligence, and wisdom. Or we can react with righteous anger, bigotry, and lash out to destroy the face that is actually us staring back at ourselves from another culture. You decide.

HEARING WITH BIG EARS

I was born with big ears, and as time has gone by they have gotten bigger, longer, more important. Having a big head and big ears led to some uncomfortable moments in childhood when perchance the sun would hit the head in a particularly dramatic way. This would create an opportunity for others to laugh and make up strange words like "bulbus". It actually never really bothered me, and in fact made me want to be an actor. Not a clown. Of course, keeping these big ears clean as a child was a conscious effort and an exercise in concentration. I was proud of the elephantine nature of these strange things on the side of my head. As I grew people from various cultures came into my life and made pronouncements about my ears publicly. Long life, strong constitution were some of the things thrown at this frail little "toe head" with the big shiny head and ears. I wasn't bald yet, but secretly could see my own face in the picture of my grandfather with his severely receding hairline and pronounced presence with spectacles that I also shared. My high school picture was the precursor of things to come. Bright and shiny with big ears was the obvious future.
As life took its course I became acquainted with many different cultures and life philosophies. My own struggle to be happy and successful caused me to make some effort to be introspective. That lasted for sometime, but not having the strength of mind to endure the rigours of serious internal discipline I moved on to simpler tasks such as eating, sleeping, fighting and as much mating as possible. This led to desperation and a myopic fixation on my unfortunate emptiness. Gradually, because of a sincere desire to be happy and connect to the greater good, I started to notice that I could hear nice things such as the wind in the trees, birds, music from a passing car, a particular complex series of notes at a Jazz event, etc. Other opportunities came into my world. Chanting ancient holy mantras profoundly moved my inner core from a fixated place to a grand stage with many wondrous events playing out their purpose. I could hear this cacophony in the center of my chest. How was this I wondered? Slowly I tracked this "hearing" to the area of the Heart. I wondered if this is what so many poetic texts and seers were talking about? Another thing was happening about the same time, and that was that I found myself in particular conversations listening to the mood of the conversation. The intention seemed to be more important to me than the actual words. Although not neglectful of the words and purpose the feeling within my chest came more into focus. A sort of blending of intellect and emotion is how I would describe it now. A new way of hearing. The big ears were still important, not vestigial, but hearing now involved both the ears and the Heart. Metaphorically the outside and the inside. I could hear and pay attention so much better, and seemed to navigate through my life in a more secure way. Trusting in the walk of life and myself became stronger. I was listening from a different place. A place where the wisdom of many seemed to gather. The mythical place talked about by many, and now by me. My big ears actually helped me become aware of the world around me and the importance of keeping them clean with nice sounds and the inner ear, the Heart, clean also. Gradually, I am now listening with much bigger ears, laughing and crying but for bigger reasons.

THE NARRATIVE VOICE

Lately I have been challenged by several people close to me in my life about the way I communicate. The intensity of emotion expressed by these very significant people has caused me to look closely at the way I share my life with my fellow humanity. I start with the idea that there are no secrets, and even that is open to discussion. Culturally the art of communication is approached in a variety of ways. In the east the psychology of the person is not important. The outward expression is the most important signature of the person. If you are able to "hold that together" you are embraced and honored. Very little is spoken of the inner life of the individual. It is expected that your inner landscape will express itself outwardly regardless of the circumstances. My teacher in India once said, "any fool can look good until they open their mouths". (sic) I took that as a sign that I should immediately "open my mouth" and take the chance of making a complete fool of myself so that I could really discover how much of a fool I am and grow.
From an earlier time I noticed that the "hip and groovies" didn't talk much. They looked good, but seemed to think that talking was some kind of an "ego trip". There was some kind of code that I didn't "grok". Of course, they listened with rapt attention to the many muscians, yogis, american indian elders, psychedelic gurus, and others waxing endlessly many ancient stories. Then they went about their way doing exactly the same things they were doing before meeting these "sages" with their sage advise. It seemed incongruent and rude to me that so little was gleaned by these exercises in listening. Why didn't more happen in the lives of these seemingly cool people? I thought that maybe they already understood everything and that these teachers were just a reminder of lessons already learned. Then one day it occurred to me that there was not going to be any action, because all of this posturing was to prop up uncertainty caused by lack of action. These were not the models I was looking for, but simple souls frozen by fear, and possibly induced paranoia. It was then that I noticed that those who had not been drained by fear and still had the courage to extend themselves were successful in finding their dreams. I also remembered that those in school who asked the seemingly stupidest questions became the most successful whereas, I who was afraid to appear stupid didn't speak up and struggled daily with achieving my dreams. AH HA !!! Now the problem was how to "speak up"?
The most ancient form of verbal intercourse appears to be story telling. Not just long stories with mysterious meanings, but actually telling a story about our activities or experience. ("Hey, know what? I killed a brontosaurus today and now we will have food for the winter!".) Now, for those of you who are thinking that just by mentioning this there appears a lack of sincerity, and an agenda on the part of the speaker (i.e. me), you are wrong. The obvious is always the most mysterious. The unseen is just unseen. Duh. All communication is a form of narrative. It is just a matter of clarity and success. Have I communicated this, or my needs, or my enthusiasm, or whatever clearly enough? Is there enough artistry included that it is of interest? Can you hear the Love and excitement in the sharing? Then the narrative is successful. The narrative voice has been heard. Practice, Practice, Practice ! I guess I need more practice so that I will not be thought of as a "know it all". How can anyone really know it all?

LIVING LIFE BETWEEN YOUR EARS

So much of how we view the world we live in is how we "Think" our world. In fact, we become conditioned, and, if I may say, addicted to "thinking" our way through life. Thoughtfulness is just what it implies; full of thought. We equate this with virtue. This is a cultural pattern derived from the roman and greek social mores. The romans and greeks had a refined materialistic view of life and how it should be lived. Their Gods were "Order Suppliers" only. Other cultures operate in other ways. Often relying on omens, non-verbal signals, listening, and nature-based guides before making decisions. Who is to say which is better? A culture that can create microwave ovens, cell phones, synthetic polymers, and other comforts and conveniences that eventually will have a limit on what can be invented, or ongoing cultures that have an infinite number of guiding choices emanating from the forces of creation and ever changing dynamics of energy? This is not to demonize the advances of science, but rather to add greater choices that have been tried and true for millenia to improve the quality of life. Learning how to listen and observe the messages nature sends that can help humanity is a laudable opportunity. Just as any learning event develops, this can grow gradually in small steps by practice. I.E. taking a silent walk through what is left of our wilderness or neighborhood parks. Sitting silently watching our breath, and letting our thoughts pass before our inner eye un-acted upon. Listening to the heart of another person and not just the meaning of the words. Remember: words are thoughts between the ears. Words are magnificent, but inadequate to convey the real meaning. Trying this should gradually provide us with a "spiritual" foundation for living our lives. This can include beliefs, but really operates in our life far beyond the help of belief. When someone says that they "Believe" in something this is only a partial explanation of the operating principle in their lives. What they believe is unimportant to the listener. This doesn't really tell us much. What are they are experiencing in the whole expanse of their lives is what is interesting or how this belief impacts daily events is interesting. What they "Believe" may be of some interest, but how does this work for them, and possibly for us? What goes on "Between the Ears" is very pale in contrast to what goes on in the heart. This spiritual (not religious) place is what gives us a ground of operation, and allows us to feel safe in a real sense and confident among others in our tribe of humanity. This is the source of confident Jolliness. Jolliness based on our latest conquest, acquisition, etc. will eventually fade into despair. The ground we walk on must be firm.

ACCOUNTABILITY / EMOTIONAL VOCABULARY

This is a difficult one to discuss. There are many dimensions to this topic so I will limit my attention to the underlying theme and its application to our everyday culture. A child doesn't feel accountable to anyone, and in fact, is really not accountable to anyone until socialization begins. Generally this is after the toddler phase as the cognitive process broadens to include a greater world than mothers' breast or bottle, and dads' smell. Slowly the individual learns how to socially negotiate the bumps and scrapes of interaction with similar beasts. Finally life unfolds and we begin to "civilize" and become responsive to others' needs as well as our own finding a middle ground that works for all parties concerned. This is the beginning of accountability for the social human. Again this process appears in early adolescence after puberty begins. It is as though the child is again no longer accountable to anyone but themselves. They seem to be learning social skills all over again, and questioning all previous ideas. Most of this is not conscious, and thus the danger. This is the time when we develop what I call our "Emotional Vocabulary". If trauma occurs the individual can become "frozen" emotionally at any given stage in this process. Here I am not speaking only about extreme trauma. Even subtle unconscious attacks to the central nervous system can create a profound impact to the ability to communicate emotions. This is where the subject of this entry "ACCOUNTABILITY" became apparent to me. We live in our moment of crisis(es) most of our lives. That is, the various points in our emergence from adolescence where we became stuck. This can be caused by strong influences like anger, fear, sex, physical abuse, attack, substances of all kinds in a toxic amount, diet, etc. In order to move on we need to develop an "Emotional Vocabulary" and an ability to be accountable to others in society both intimately and collectively. Fortunately or unfortunately we always are accountable to others, seen and unseen, in this journey of life. Be strong and courageous and begin to write and practice your Emotional Vocabulary so that you can fearlessly be accountable to all in your path. Great things will begin to happen.
